The Tide® Offers New Hope in the New Year Through Gospel Radio Programming Around Globe

With Christmas now passed for another season, many Christians look for ways they can glorify God in the new year. T he Tide ®  is no different, as the 71-year-old organization continually searches for and prays about new ways to reach listeners with the hope of Jesus Christ—especially in the new year. “We rejoice that the Lord has touched so many lives through The Tide in 2017,” said Director Don Shenk. “Now, as we look ahead to 2018, we know God has much in store for this ministry that had humble beginnings in a small Pennsylvania town. Today, The Tide ministry reaches listeners in eight countries through 25 heart languages. But in reality, so many more are impacted because many of The Tide radio programs can also be heard online, making their reach virtually limitless.” For example, Xhavid from Greece listens to gospel programming from The Tide every week online and says that he is so thankful for the local pastor’s messages. “I understand the Word of God better and I have learne

Christmas Letter

We spend the whole year declaring the Gospel message and God’s gift of salvation for all mankind, but there is something special about devoting a specific time every December to celebrate the birth of Jesus, the foundation, source and author of our salvation! As I write this greeting to wish you a wonderful and blessed Christmas celebration, I also want to thank you for all you have done to enable The Tide ministry to declare the hope of Christ to people living in spiritual darkness. Just last month, Becky and I were in India visiting with the leaders and staff of the Good News Hour radio ministry. We were joined by some of our ministry partners from Zimbabwe and Thailand for a wonderful time of sharing and learning together. Our time there coincided with a Hindu religious festival during which idols were carried to the river and either set adrift on makeshift boats or simply thrown into the river. Although I don’t know all the complexities of this ritual, it brought to mind the pas

The Tide® Blessed to Celebrate True Joy of Christmas With Listeners Worldwide

Christmas is right around the corner, and as Christians everywhere celebrate Jesus’ birth—the true reason for the season— The Tide ®   is blessed to share about His life with radio listeners around the world. “We are grateful that God allows us to reach millions of potential listeners in eight countries through 25 languages, as we tell them why Jesus came to Earth as a babe in a manger—to ultimately die for their sins and give the gift of eternal life,” said Don Shenk. “Regardless of the persecution some of these listeners face, they can hold onto the true joy found in Christ this Christmas.” For example, Ilirjana from Switzerland listens to the Albanian Radio 7 broadcast, which is also available online to listeners in other countries. The mother of three reported to The Tide ministry that her husband is not a believer and she has little opportunity to meet other Christians. But, she says, “I am so thankful for the online programs that you are broadcasting. I listen to Pastor J regu

Representatives from The Tide Meet Joyful Christians in India

Representatives from The Tide ® recently returned from a visit to India, where the ministry has shared the Gospel over the airwaves for nearly 40 years. “It’s wonderful to visit somewhere new but coming home makes you appreciate your blessings,” Director Don Shenk. “In India, team members from The Tide ministry were able to interact with those who help produce and broadcast the ‘Good News Hour’ radio ministry. We were joined by some of our ministry partners from Zimbabwe and Thailand for a wonderful time of sharing and learning together.” Both of these partners took away something different from the trip, Shenk said. The team members from Thailand found their time in India to be very beneficial, as they learned ministry strategies they can adapt and apply as they grow their outreach to the Isaan people of Thailand. Leaders at The Tide ministry are praying that this budding partnership in Thailand will take root and thrive, bringing many more people to faith and hope in Christ. “Th

Zimbabweans Celebrate in the Streets After Resignation of President

After a tense time of political unrest, the people of Zimbabwe are celebrating now that former president Robert Mugabe has resigned. This news marks a fresh start for Zimbabwe, one of the eight nations where The Tide ® shares the Gospel. Don Shenk, director of The Tide ministry, was born in Zimbabwe, then Rhodesia, and his brother and missionary parents still live there. “The people of Zimbabwe have been on a roller coaster ride of unrest,” Shenk said. “But now they have reason to celebrate. Soon after President Mugabe’s resignation was announced, my family members sent videos of Zimbabweans singing and dancing in the streets. We praise God for the fresh start for these wonderful people. “While many Zimbabweans identify as Christian and enjoy religious freedom, a large number still participate in traditional African religious practices like ancestral spirit worship and witchcraft,” Shenk added. “Even though this African nation has been fairly extensively evangelized, many more sti

Now Sharing the Gospel in 25th Heart Language—Isaan in Thailand

The Tide ®  is now offering Gospel programs in its 25th heart language—Isaan, spoken by 19 million people in Thailand. This initiative allows Thailand to join multiple regions of Albania, Bhutan, India, Kosovo, Nepal, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe, where we have already been active in broadcasting Gospel radio programming—in the languages people were born to speak. “When we think of Thailand, the words ‘tourist destination’ may come to some people’s minds nowadays,” said Director Don Shenk. “But Thailand has become significant to the ministry in a different sense. We’ve recently begun sharing Gospel radio programming in the Isaan language, spoken by 19 million people in Thailand.” Isaan is the 25th heart language in which The Tide  is sharing Gospel radio programming. Each show in this new language is about 45 minutes long and includes music, testimonies, and passages from the Bible. Local villages in Thailand have received storyteller devices and are now able to listen to the program in the

At Thanksgiving, Be Thankful for the Truth of God’s Word

The Thanksgiving holiday is an ideal time of year to pause and truly reflect on the abundant blessings God has bestowed on our lives. The Tide ® encourages believers to prioritize their time by giving the ultimate thanks to God for sharing His wisdom through the Gospel. “All of us can get caught up with hectic day-to-day activities, but when we stop to appreciate the precious gift of life we have been given, our hearts are more receptive to the love that Jesus Christ shows us every minute of every day,” said The Tide Director Don Shenk. “The Tide is certainly grateful for the opportunities we have been granted to spread God’s Word around the world for over 70 years through radio programming in 25 native languages on three continents. With the support of those who believe in our mission, The Tide ministry has been able to evangelize in Albania, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Nigeria, Kosovo, Thailand and Zimbabwe so that millions of radio listeners can better understand God’s Word and follow J

The Tide® Provides Peace Through Gospel Radio Programming in Nigeria

Though Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa, many natives don’t have the financial means or spiritual opportunities to learn about Jesus in their own language. But The Tide ®  global radio ministry’s “ Radios for Nigeria ” project has helped people listen to God’s Word in 11 different Nigerian languages. “Nigeria has been severely impacted by the rise of Boko Haram’s power,” said The Tide Director Don Shenk. “Attacks on schools, violence, outbreaks of disease, violence, and malnutrition are just some of the devastating reasons why Nigerians should turn to Jesus Christ for guidance. The Tide ministry’s Gospel radio broadcasts have brought immense joy to Nigerian natives, who have shared that our programs are like ‘new wine’ because they impart ‘newfound truth.’ We’re honored to reach so many in Nigeria through our Radios for Nigeria project, where generous donors can provide a radio to whole families or entire villages for just $40—the cost of a dinner or movie here is the U

Don and Becky Shenk Attend Leadership Conference in India

Leaders from The Tide are currently traveling in India, training other leaders for full-time service to the Lord and enabling them to share Jesus’ love and saving grace through radio airwaves. The Tide began its ministry 71 years ago, and since 1978, it has been broadcasting Gospel radio programming throughout India and is continually working toward ways to continue to reach over 1.3 billion people in India—and the rest of the world. The Tide Director Don Shenk is joining other leaders from countries around the world this month in India. “ Leaders who bring The Tide ministry’s radio programs to listeners around the world are currently meeting in India to discuss how they can further advance the gospel message,” Shenk said. “We kindly ask for prayers—that God will give us the wisdom to lead others toward Him—regardless of the obstacles. But the life-changing impact of our work keeps us motivated. A listener from India who appreciates our radio outreach recently remarked the program

Father Figures, in Heaven and on Earth, Needed in Nigeria

A father figure is important in the development of a young child’s life, not just for physical and mental growth, but also for spiritual growth. The nation of Nigeria recognizes this, and UNICEF in the African country recently recommended four weeks of paid paternity leave so fathers could be a part of the very important early childhood years in a young boy or girl’s life.  The Tide ® broadcasts Gospel programming in Nigeria and also aims to reach listeners at an early age so they can spend a lifetime with Jesus as their Savior. “Just as we rely on our Heavenly Father for spiritual guidance, we pray that children around the globe will be able to develop a better understanding of God’s Word from a young age,” said The Tide Director Don Shenk. “Though Nigerians speak more than 470 different languages, we trust that The Tide gospel radio programming airing in villages throughout the country will bring Nigerians closer to God’s offer of salvation.” The Tide began broadcasting in Niger

My Heart for The Tide: John Miller

Radio waves can go where humans sometimes can’t to reach people who may have no other opportunity to hear the Gospel message.  Sharing the hope of salvation through Christ with people who are sometimes overlooked and often unreached by the gospel remains my primary passion for the ministry of Gospel Tide.  Having increased to broadcasting the Gospel message in 25 languages in recent years, I am encouraged with our current focus on strengthening our ministry efforts in the eight regions in the world where we now have a presence and an influence. When I learned that, for every dollar given, Gospel Tide reaches 20 more people with the Gospel, I am enthused with our collective goal to reach the threshold of $100,000 for each of the eight regions for long-term sustainability of this ministry with the humble beginnings in Chambersburg 71 years ago.  Can you imagine the reunion in heaven with those we will never meet on earth, but with the common thread that they heard the Gospel in their ow

Although Christianity Is Prevalent in Zimbabwe, Pastors and Believers Are Not Without Challenges

In Zimbabwe, about 90 percent of citizens identify as Christian, but a well-known pastor is getting some pushback from the nation’s dictatorial regime. Last month, an article in The Zimbabwean highlighted the suffering and false imprisonment of Pastor Evan Mawarire, while further coverage by CNN found that the pastor’s freedom of speech was being attacked after he called Zimbabweans to action regarding fuel shortages and sudden price hikes. Zimbabwe is one of seven nations where The Tide ® broadcasts Gospel programming and works with many local pastors to reach listeners. Director Don Shenk was born to missionary parents in Zimbabwe, then Rhodesia, and taught at Ekuphileni Bible Institute, a Bible school in the African nation, where he also served as Academic Dean and Director of Student Ministries. Through 28 years living in Zimbabwe, Shenk developed and implemented training programs to enable rural pastors to minister to their people. “While Christianity is prevalent in Zimbab

U.S. and Thailand Come Together to Strengthen Relationships in Indo-Pacific Region

Earlier this month, Thailand’s prime minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha, met with President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss ways to strengthen and broaden bilateral relations and enhance cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, according to Reuters.  The Tide ® took particular interest in this meeting, as the ministry recently began sharing Gospel programming in the Isaan language, spoken by 19 million people in Thailand. Isaan is the 25th heart language through which The Tide ministry shares the love and saving grace of Jesus Christ with millions of people around the world . The Tide ministry also has a presence in Albania, Bhutan, India, Kosovo, Nepal, Nigeria and Zimbabwe, broadcasting Gospel radio programming—in the languages people were born to speak. “No matter what’s happening around the world, a sense of hope is restored when two countries are able to come together and discuss matters they hope to resolve or improve,” said The Tide Director Don Shenk. “Currently, The Ti

Lives Impacted in Practical Ways on 3 Continents | Kosovo

What kind of help can people get from a few simple words? If those words are in the language they were born to speak and straight from the Bible, a handful of words can make a world of difference. The Tide ®  counts on this truth when broadcasting global Gospel radio programs around the world—in seven countries on three continents in 24 languages. “One of our heartfelt goals at The Tide ministry is to speak truth into people’s lives over radio airwaves,” said The Tide Director Don Shenk. “Everyone has challenges to deal with, no matter what country we’re living in. A radio listener from Kosovo recently shared the profound impact that our radio program has made in his life, and we are so thankful for these lives and the way the Lord has allowed us to impact them through His Word.” The Tide ministry’s Radio 7 broadcasts in Kosovo have brought nearly 12,500 people closer to the Gospel message. A listener named Kujtim recently expressed that even though he isn’t very religious, he ap

Bhutan Leader Calls UN to Moments of Silence

At the recent United Nations gathering, many leaders aimed to be heard. But one world leader called for silence. Bhutan Prime Minister Lyonchoen Tshering Tobgay paused for three periods of silence during his speech at the UN, reported Fox News , for those experiencing the ravages of recent hurricanes, impacted by poverty and fighting terrorism. The Tide ®  broadcasts Gospel programming in Bhutan and is also concerned for those affected by these forces. “It was inspiring to see a world leader call on his peers to observe three moments of silence for those suffering around the globe,” said The Tide Director Don Shenk. “This simple action spoke volumes and allowed people to grow in unity. The power of reflection can leave us in awe, yet it leads us closer to God and His plan for the world He created. “The Tide ministry is blessed to be able to provide Gospel radio programming in Bhutan, produced in local languages so listeners can strengthen their relationship with Jesus Christ and li

New Bill Bans Religious Conversion and Evangelism in Nepal

Nepal parliament recently passed a law that criminalizes religious conversions and evangelism, and now the faithful there are calling for amendments that will protect Christians who want to spread the Good News of the Gospel, reports The Christian Post . The recently passed law, adds The Christian Post, could further escalate Christian persecution. The Tide ® global radio ministry broadcasts Gospel programming in Nepal, as well as in six other nations on three continents. As a result, many believers in Nepal have found new strength in Christ. But with the recent ban, how can Christians in Nepal remain strong in their faith? “We continue to pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are facing uncertainty and fear in nations where persecution is common, and simply talking about Jesus Christ or carrying a Bible could be not only illegal but dangerous,” said The Tide Director Don Shenk. “We pray that the Christians living in Nepal, and those who have a newfound faith in Christ aft

The Tide Reaches Listeners in Albania Who Aren’t Afraid to Share the Gospel

The Tide   has heard touching stories of what it’s like for Christians to live in a Muslim-majority country. After listening to The Tide Gospel radio programming, one listener in Albania shared her powerful testimony. Director Don Shenk reports that Ida, a university professor, recently told the ministry that she regularly listens to a Tide radio program and talks about Christianity with her students. “I listen to Radio 7 all the time, and the broadcast has literally changed my life,” Ida shared. “I’m a university professor, and I believe God has placed me in the midst of students to make a difference for God’s Kingdom. I often share my faith with my students and encourage them to search for God and know Him.” Ida’s brave decision to share her testimony with her students can actually be a dangerous one. According to a recent Associated Press article, Albania has heightened its security efforts due to terror threats and attacks in Europe. Police have increased their presence at co

UNICEF Reports That Children Are Being Used as ‘Human Bombs’ in Nigeria

UNICEF recently reported disturbing news out of Nigeria, where Boko Haram insurgents are using children as “human bombs” in the northeast part of the country. According to UNICEF, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, the past year has seen a four-fold increase in the number of children, especially girls, used as suicide bombers. A UNICEF spokesperson told the Voice of America news outlet that 83 children were forced into these missions—55 girls under the age of 15 and 27 boys—that target markets, schools, universities and displacement camps. In 2009, The Tide ®  global radio ministry began broadcasting Gospel programming in Nigeria in the Efik language. Since then, programs in more languages have been steadily added, and listeners can currently hear broadcasts from  The Tide in 11 different languages, with the potential to be heard by millions of people who do not yet know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. “The level of human suffering in our world today can s

India’s Christians Face Additional Challenges Under New President

Image
Imagine the leader of any country worldwide not respecting its citizens’ religious beliefs, including Christianity. That’s the reality in India, where the new president, Hindu nationalist Ram Nath Kovind , is considered a threat to Christians, according to Christianity Today. Current Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind. | Photo Credit: Ranjeet Kumar In the heavily populated Hindu nation of India, Christians are the minority, but new believers in Christ rely on their brothers and sisters for support and are encouraged by Gospel programming from The Tide ® . “Those who are able to listen to the Tide’s gospel radio program ‘Jiwan Roti’ in India have appreciated learning about salvation and the love of Jesus,” said The Tide Director Don Shenk. “But prayers are needed now more than ever that India’s leadership will become more accepting of Christians.” The Tide  frequently hears from radio listeners around the world who testify to the life change they enjoy through their newfound faith in

Celebrating 71 Years of Radio Ministry

Image
Last year at this time, we were excited to be celebrating 70 years of effectively reaching people for Christ through radio ministry. This year, there’s not so much fanfare, as The Tide ministry passes another annual milestone and turns 71. Why is it that we treat some anniversaries as more significant than others? Thankfully, that’s not how God views us. Every life has equal value to God, and Jesus gave His life on the cross so that anyone and everyone who believes in Him can have new life and enter into eternal fellowship with God. That’s the message we continue sharing through heart language radio programs and will remain our core mission and purpose as long as there are people who have not yet heard about Jesus and what He has done for them. The Bible tells us that eventually, everyone will stand before God, and this year we have made “Every Knee, Every Tongue” our theme. As I write this, I am full of gratitude for you and your heart for the lost. Thank you for choosing to use Th

Muslim Student Comes to the Aid of a Christian After Listening to The Tide®

The Tide ® recently heard an amazing story about two students in Nigeria—one Muslim and one Christian—who were connected because of a Tide gospel radio program. Director Don Shenk reported that a Christian student in Nigeria was accused of blasphemy by Muslim students, then beaten into a state of unconsciousness. By divine intervention, a Muslim student rushed the Christian student to a nearby hospital before others could do further harm. “When someone later asked the Muslim student why he chose to help this Christian, he answered that he had listened to The Tide’s Hausa language radio program the night before,” Shenk said. “After more than 70 years of reaching people groups around the world, we know that The Tide gospel radio programs can be life-changing, but in this case, one program was life-saving as well! What an amazing testament to God’s power to change hearts through His Word.” The Tide ministry’s newest initiative, called “Every Knee, Every Tongue,” allows people to hel

A sampling of letters from those whose hearts have been touched by The Tide radio programs. Full names and location are not included to protect identity. Albania I love listening to Pastor Hervin. I learned a lot from the Bible because of his radio show. His passion for the Word of God is contagious. I’m so happy now we can download the programs from the website. I share them with my colleagues at work. They are not believers but they always have those moments when they need God and are more open to hear. Pastor Hervin’s programs help me to share my faith with them and other family members. –  Marsela I listen to Radio 7 all the time, and the broadcast has literally changed my life. I’m a university professor, and I believe God has placed me in the midst of students to make a difference for God’s Kingdom. Transition Time

We apologize for not being prompt in our posting. Within the next few weeks, The Tide will be switching servers for our website and that has left us in a bit of a mess. As of right now, we are unsure as to whether we will continue using Blogger or if we stop posting here all together, but for now, we are going to continue posting. Thank you all for your continued loyalty to our ministry!

Spring Concerts Benefit The Tide Ministry

Music features prominently in scripture, and in the Old Testament we often see musicians at the forefront in a variety of situations. King Jehoshaphat had a choir leading his army into battle, and in literary fashion this spring The Tide ministry has had musicians leading the charge as we continue in the spiritual battle to win souls for Christ and build the Kingdom of God in the hearts of people around the globe. During the month of April the Cumberland Valley Christian Choir presented a cantata entitled “Blessed Hope” in four different venues. Audiences across central Pennsylvania were treated to a spiritually uplifting time of inspiration and worship, and were challenged to grow in their own faith, and to give generously so that others may come to know Christ. The choir takes nothing from the offerings collected at the concerts for their own use, but instead each year designates the entire offering to a ministry organization, We are extremely grateful that his year the Cumberland Va

Have You Heard? Challenge helps Christians Obey Jesus' Command to Make Disciples

About 45 percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions, but only 8 percent achieve success in keeping them through the end of the year.  In fact, reports Statistic Brain, just 64 percent keep their resolutions past one month, and only 46 percent stick to them for six months. But The Tide® global radio ministry has a suggestion for a resolution worth keeping in 2017. This year—and every year—The Tide ministry is focused on obeying Jesus’ command to make disciples, which is why it has issued a creative challenge for Christians. The “Have You Heard?” initiative urges Christians to be aware of all those who cross their paths every day and may be without the hope of Jesus Christ. “How many people do we pass by every day who do not know Jesus?” asked Don Shenk, director of The Tide ministry. “The answer is probably too numerous to count. That’s why The Tide ministry is reminding people to speak up about Jesus by urging them to accept our ‘Have You Heard?’ challenge. Hundreds have

Zimbabwe Radio Program from The Tide® Ministry Reaching More Through Technology

Image
T he Tide ®   global radio ministry has been providing radio programs to remote villages around the globe to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ for more than 70 years. But  The Tide  ministry’s work goes so much deeper by also building radio studios, providing leader-to-leader training and ensuring that villagers have Bibles. Currently,  The Tide  ministry works to reach people in seven countries on three continents in 24 heart languages, including in Zimbabwe, the home to the only program from  The Tide  ministry that airs five days a week. “Our team in Zimbabwe has produced 16 Sunday church service radio broadcasts so far this year, and the popular program there, titled ‘Amagugu Evangli,’ attracts a large audience, as many crave hearing the word of God in their own language,” said The Tide Director Don Shenk, who was born in what was once   Rhodesia, and served as a missionary teaching and leading the Ekuphileni Bible Institute in Zimbabwe, where he lived for 28 years. “Our Zi

Christianity in Nepal is Thriving Inspire of Increased Persecution

To give context of our update, the following is a summary of a story originally published on  Christianity Today : In April 2015, a 7.8 magnitude  earthquake  struck Nepal, after which eight Christians from Nepal were invited by a pastor to do trauma counseling for children at their school. Shortly after, these Christians were wrongly convicted of trying to convert the children. (There is freedom of religion in Nepal, however one is not allowed to try to convert anyone.) The Christians were detained, but were released on bail shortly after; and in December 2016, a Nepali court dropped the case against the Christians. This incident was the first freedom of religion dispute since Nepal’s new constitution that deemed the country secular. However, according to Lok Mani Dhaka, a member of the Nepali Parliament, “When the time came to pass the drafts constitution in parliament, major parties built a consensus that secularism means the state should protect the traditional majority religion

Amagugu Evangeli First Quarter Update

Praise the Lord, Amagugu Evangeli Radio Ministries is thriving!  In addition to producing Sunday service programs, which have the biggest audience to date, the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) has invited Amagugu Evangeli to produce thirty 5-minute morning devotions. These are now airing for free because of being produced based on the mutual benefit of getting Christian content. Also, all of their Sunday services are re-broadcast on-line following their on-air broadcast. These are then available for free to audiences through  Soundcloud . Alongside of these programs, Amagugu Evangeli is producing 5-minute daily broadcasts and distributing them through the app Whatsapp. This is a cheaper means of using technology, reaching an audience average of 600 every day, and allowing people the chance to interact with broadcasts and ask questions. Amagug Evangeli is currently working in conjunction with their Brethren in Christ Church Overseers who re-broadcast these to their respectiv

The Tide Ministry Looks Back on 2016 and Ahead to 2017

The past year has been a busy and exciting time for The Tide ®️  ministry, as we celebrated our 70th anniversary while continuing to pursue our mission to creatively share the Good News of Jesus Christ worldwide through media and partnerships. Through God's faithfulness and your support, we were able to make great progress in 2016 on a number of initiatives to help us tell more people around the world about Jesus. In 2015, we began an Albanian radio outreach in two major cities in Albania, and also in one city in neighboring Kosovo, where Albanian is the official language. The many positive responses from Albanian listeners prompted us to make it a goal for 2016 to add another day of programming in each of these countries. Praise God that we not only added another day of programming, but are now also airing the programs in a third city in Albania and a second city in Kosovo! Albanian listeners can now hear the Gospel more frequently, and we are reaching new believers through
